Summer is Here!

Hope your summer is full of lots of fun. The change in weather can be challenging for us to adjust to, as well as for our pets. Please keep in mind that you should avoid keeping your pet in your car. Cars heat up extremely quickly. If you must leave them in your car, leave the windows rolled down (but not too much so they can escape) and find a shady spot. Even with these precautions, your pet shouldn't be in your car for more than several minutes. Also, if your pets are alone for long periods during the day while you are at work, leave extra water for them, and try to give them access to the coolest areas of your home. Tiled surfaces can help keep their bellies cooler. If you have a fan, consider keeping that on for them, and keep the windows open as well. Also, if you enjoy taking your pet for walks or on outings, remember that their bodies are much closer to the hot cement and asphalt than we are, and they will become overheated much more quickly. Bring water with you and try to limit the amount of time they are exposed to hot surfaces.

Remember to keep your pet leashed at all times while outdoors! With the exception of dog parks, it is crucial that your pet is leashed at all times. Many people feel that they are allowing their pets to enjoy life more if they are free to wander, or that their pet is well trained and doesn't require a leash. Keeping your pet on a leash is for their own safety - it protects them from being hit by a car, and it protects them from other animals. You don't have to worry about your pet running in front of a car if you have control of them with a leash. And if your pet meets another animal and they are not getting along, the leash will more simply allow you to control their interaction and pull the away from each other before the situation worsens.

We hope you and your pet enjoy a happy and healthy summer!

Our featured Pet of the Week is either currently living in a shelter or in a foster home in San Diego County. Shelter dogs only have a certain amount of time in the shelter, so if you are interested, please act quickly. Foster dogs are living in foster homes with volunteers that agree to rescue them from the shelter and care for them until they find new homes. The more quickly the foster dogs get adopted, the more we can rescue from the shelter!
